For a bit of a personal touch, make a homemade bed for the newest member of the family. Creating a rustic king bed set was the norm for people in bygone days. Whether you are trying to regain this nostalgia or just stay within a budget, a homemade or alternate cot is a project that can be achieved through one’s own do-it-yourself self.
A proven alternative to a baby basket or cot is a laundry basket. A robust, rectangular wash basin is the basis for a home-made kid bed when combined with the right food. Cut a piece of foam pad to fit the bottom of the wash basket. Create a fabric or waterproof plastic cover for the foam to act as a mattress. Use one side of a crib bumper set to line the internal sides of the basket. Tie the bumper to the openings. This portable homemade bed can be taken from room to room as needed.
Some may have heard stories from parents and grandparents to place a new baby in a king bed set. This idea still has merits today. Choose a large, deep chest of drawers. If you are not at home already, look for one from old furniture at thrift stores or flea markets. Clean the inside of the box well and lightly sand the sides to make sure they are smooth and free of splinters. Line the box completely with a thin foam attached with hot glue. Put a baby blanket or blanket all over the box, so its sides are over the outer edges, long enough so that they will not fall back into the bedroom.
